Five lesser-known European countries that I want to visit

Congratulations, you are going to Europe this year, 2024. However, you’re not sure where to go. You might be worried about visiting popular places because they’re full of tourists. You’re correct. They will be crowded, especially this summer. With that thought in mind, in this blog, I’m going to five lesser-known European countries that I want to explore, and perhaps you will too.

What type of traveler should consider these options?

Let me start by answering a basic question: What type of traveler would fit these countries well?

  1. Seasoned European traveler. By that, I mean you’ve been there at least a few times and are comfortable and confident traveling to Europe. I do not recommend these options for rookies.
  2. You’re a budget traveler. You need to save some money. The countries on this list are less expensive because they are less popular than many other European countries.
  3. You’re just looking for an adventure. You want to leave your comfort zone and visit places few other travelers visit.

Lesser-known European Country #1 – Slovenia

Many people have never heard of this country, even though it is only a stone’s throw from several popular European countries like Italy, Austria, and Croatia. Slovenia is known for its natural beauty. Look at the picture below of Lake Bled – it is stunning. Many consider the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, a hidden gem. Why list Slovenia as number one? I want to go to this country on this list the most.

Country #2 – Montenegro

Montenegro is a small country on the Adriatic Sea, just south of Croatia. It is known for its beautiful landscapes, coastal cities, and mountainous terrain. I think it would be fun to visit for a week or two and explore all over Montenegro.

Lesser-known European Country #3 – Albania

I’m including a picture of the map below if you’re wondering where Albania is located. It is north of Greece and not far from Italy, which makes it not too hard to get to. I hear Albania is a traveler’s dream from a cost perspective. As you can see on the map, it has an extensive Adriatic Sea coastline.

Country #4 – Bulgaria

We’re getting into some adventurous travel with this country. I don’t know anybody who’s been to Bulgaria. It looks like there is some interesting architecture in the capital city of Sofia. I hear there are a lot of fascinating sights around Bulgaria and a different culture than other parts of Europe.

Lesser-known European Country #5 – North Macedonia

We are getting obscure with this option. This country is located just north of Greece. There’s one big reason I want to visit this country. Alexander the Great is from here. If you’re a history buff like me, I think exploring this small country nestled in the Balkans is worth exploring. You will notice almost all of these countries are from that region in Europe.

One thing you may not like about these lesser-known countries

One thing you may not like about visiting these countries is culture shock. What does that mean?

  1. I would not expect everyone to speak English.
  2. The infrastructure will not be nearly as developed as other large European countries.
  3. Getting to and back from will probably be more challenging, especially for American travelers.

I encourage you to get outside your comfort zone and consider visiting these lesser-known European countries sometime during your lifetime.
