It is summertime and that means family vacation. Great news – we were able to get over to Bavaria. The main reason was to spend time with my son Riley. This trip also gave the kids a chance to experience one of the best parts of Germany. Here are five reasons I love spending time in Bavaria Germany.

The #1 reason that I love Bavaria- I lived there

I lived in Bavaria for four years back in the 1990s while serving in the US Army. I was stationed in Kitzingen which is near Wurzburg. My older son was born in Wurzburg. I love Bavaria. It is a great place to visit and will always have a special place in my heart.

Wurzburg is a wonderful city in the Franken region of Bavaria.

Reason #2 – Munich

The capital of Bavaria is Munich. It is a fun and vibrant city. Full of sites, breweries, and beer gardens. I have been to Munich multiple times and enjoyed every visit. A recipe for a good time – hang out in a beer garden with your friends. If you are planning to visit this region, start the trip in Munich.

Reason #3 – castles

Bavaria is full of castles. The most famous are the ones built by “Mad” King Ludwig and his father. Neuschwanstein is probably the most visited and photographed castle in the world. Be sure to also go to Hohenschwangau which was built by his father. And explore my favorite Ludwig castle, Linderhof. A hunting lodge fit for a flamboyant king. If you love seeing castles, visit this region. They are all over the place.

Reason #4 – Rothenburg

Rothenburg is the best-preserved medieval city in all of Germany. Walking around this place is like living in a museum. For Christmas fans, the Kathe Wohlfahrt store is located here. If you vacation in Germany make sure you visit this historic city. It is a must-see site. Sure – it is touristy. But, I have never had a bad time while there.

Reason #5 for why I love Bavaria – beer

Let’s get serious. Bavarians make the best beer in the world. You will have plenty of opportunities to sample the many different options while there. No better way to spend a day than hanging out with your friends drinking some great Bavarian beer. Prost!
