One of my favorite places to visit in Bavaria is Rothenburg. It is the best-preserved medieval city in all of Germany. Here are five reasons I love visiting Rothenburg, Germany.
The #1 reason I love visiting Rothenburg Germany – Sites
This place is full of all kinds of things to see and experience. Start in the town square which includes the huge town hall. Walking around this town is like wandering in a museum. It is one of the best places to get lost and explore.
Reason #2 – Architecture
Rothenburg is well-preserved. It has more half-timbered houses than other places in Germany. Even though most the buildings come from the same era, it contains several different architectural styles. Explore and enjoy.
Reason #3 – Christmas shopping
This town is where Kathe Wohlfahrt was created. If you want to see a store that contains more Christmas decorations than any place in the world – go to the Kathe Wohlfahrt store. If it is too crowded there are several more in town. I like to say it this way – Germans invented Christmas and Kathe Wohlfahrt perfected it. I always shop a little when here.
Reason #4 – City Walls
As a medieval city, Rothenburg built city walls for protection. They are still there. Spend some time walking the walls. You get great views of the city and a different perspective. The entire city is not surrounded, but they are some of the best-preserved walls you will find in Germany.
Reason #5 – History
I will say it again – walking around Rothenburg is like wandering through a museum. The Bavarians do an excellent job keeping the town in tip-top shape. As you explore this city, you will feel the history. There is a funny story about how the mayor supposedly saved the town by drinking a huge cup of wine in one gulp with invaders at the gate and then slept for days. Of course, the story is a legend (complete BS), but it is part of the fun.
Helpful hint for visiting Rothenburg
When you are here, drop the map and wander around. There are many nooks and crannies in this town that are worth exploring. Get out and about. Don’t worry about spending too much time in any one building. Wander around and take in the town for all that it is – the best-preserved medieval city in all of Germany.
