My older son, Gavin, and I went to Europe this year. Most of our adventure was in Germany. Luckily, we were able to visit the capital of Alsace France for a day. I have been to this wonderful French city many times. Here are five reasons I love visiting Strasbourg France.
Reason #1 – Cathedral
Strasbourg cathedral is enormous. You can see it from miles away. It displays amazing architecture. Be sure to go inside to witness the astrological clock and stained glass. Climb to the top if you dare – lots of steps. But, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the city. Strasbourg cathedral is one of the best in all of France, and Europe.
Reason #2 – Little France
Little France or Petite France is a must-see part of the city. It is full of half-timbered houses – many that sit on the river. Wander around and take lots of pictures here. Sure – it is touristy. However, I always enjoy spending time there.
Reason #3 – Christmas
Strasbourg does it up for Christmas. The entire city is decorated to include a huge tree and many vendors selling traditional holiday products at several locations. They have one of the best Christmas markets in France.
Reason #4 – Cafes
Like many French cities – this one is full of cafes. Strasbourg is a large city, probably over a million people live there. However, there are only two Starbucks in the entire city. The reason is that people here much prefer real cafes. I do as well, although I did purchase a Starbucks mug while visiting. They are my favorite souvenirs.
Reason #5 – architecture
Two distinct parts comprise Strasbourg. The old city is French and full of Alsatian architecture. Half-timbered houses are scattered throughout the old city. The “new” city was built by the Germans. It includes classic big German architecture. It is worthwhile to tour both parts to compare and contrast the French with German styles.
Three quick questions about Strasbourg
- What is my favorite place to visit – the new part of the city. I found this section fascinating.
- What is the best place to get a great photo – half-timbered houses in Little France or from the top of the Cathedral.
- What is my favorite hotel – Hotel Cathedrale. It is somewhat expensive, but you cannot beat the location.
