I’m identifying the best three albums by my fifty favorite rock bands of all time. This blog is for #4 – The Foo Fighters.

Criteria for selecting the best three albums

First, greatest hits albums are not permitted. Second – no live albums. I will note for the record that the Foo Fighters are one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Dave puts on a show. Third I will include an honorable mention album or two for the top 25 bands.

The third-best album by the Foo Fighters is their self-titled debut record. It is remarkable for three reasons. First, Nirvana had just ended with the suicide of Kurt Cobain. Dave Grohl took a huge risk coming out from behind the drums, writing the songs, and putting out the first Foo Fighters album. Second, Dave Grohl plays all of the instruments which is just astounding. Third this record includes some great songs. If you’ve never listened to this record, do yourself a favor and stream it today.

The second-best album by the Foo Fighters is The Color and the Shape, This album includes several killer songs by the Foo Fighters including “Monkey Wrench”, “My Hero”, and “Everlong”. It rocked and proved that they were gonna be rock and roll stars.

Honorable mention albums for this band

Sonic Highways was a concept where the band went from city to city in America writing new songs and collaborating with musicians from those cities that resulted in a record and a video documentary. I thought the album and the documentary were both excellent. The second honorable mention is their most recent album But Here We Are. I’m amazed that the band created such an excellent album after Taylor Hawkins’s untimely death. The more I listen to this record the more I enjoy it. If you missed the release of this album and you love this band go listen to this album. It is definitely a worthwhile investment. You will not regret it.

The best album by The Foo Fighters

The best album by the Foo Fighters is called Wasting Light. I love this album. Dave Grohl thought they were getting a little bit too sophisticated and decided to record the record in his garage using old-school equipment. The results are really amazing. I own this one on vinyl. It has several great songs such as “Bridge Burning”, “Rope”, “These Days”, “Back and Forth”, and “Walk”. I recommend that you buy this album on vinyl for the sound that was produced using this unique approach.
